Old Rock Day

January 7, 2013

Happy Old Rock Day

I had some trouble think of ways to celebrate this day. The only things I came up with had to do with going outside. I figured all rocks are old….where do I find rocks….outside. Boo! Out side equals far too cold for my little self. Then came the brainstorming….which hurt said brain so I decided to have some lunch instead. Then it hit me like a bag of bricks….or rocks in this case! I will listen to classic rock music whilst making rock candy swizzle sticks, which I will then suck into submission during O Brother Where Art Thou’s song Big Rock Candy Mountain! Perfect!

I listened to the music until I couldn’t take it anymore yet I thoroughly enjoyed making the candy. Things like that go terribly awry for me! There are few things in this world that give me genuine anxiety, but cooking and high-pressure telephone calls are at the top of the list! The only way I can have average cooking success is if no one knows I’m doing it and if I’m completely alone. Today was no exception. In my solitude I spent minute after minute boiling sugar, corn syrup, molasses, and water into a muddy gunge. As the directions indicated I poured it all out onto a greased cookie sheet, let it cool, then smashed the crap out of it with a meat tenderizer :D Possibly my favorite part. Insert many dippings of a skewer into the syrup and the rocks and fast forward to the end result!  Yes…it may resemble a bedazzled poop-on-a-stick, but let me assure you it is DE.LI.CIOUS!

After Mom finishes frosting these baby shower cookies, we’ll all head downstairs for O Brother. I may or may not have told my parents eating a rock stick was a requirement, and they may or may not have had VERY worried looks on their faces. :D heh heh. No matter….more for me!
